چکیده

FOREWORD The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Wireless Roadside Inspection (WRI) Program is demonstrating the feasibility and value of electronically assessing truck and motorcoach driver and vehicle safety at least 25 times more often than is possible using only physical roadside inspections. WRI Pilot Tests were conducted to prototype, test, and demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of electronically collecting safety data messages (SDMs) from in-service commercial vehicles and performing WRIs using three different communication systems. The results of this program have been used in conjunction with the results of complementary independent evaluations to support an overall assessment of the feasibility and benefits of WRI in enhancing motor carrier safety (reduction in crashes) due to increased compliance (change in motor carrier and driver behavior) caused by conducting frequent safety inspections electronically, at highway speeds, without delay or need to divert into a weigh station. This WRI Phase II final report is intended to capture and summarize the key results of interest to stakeholders as they review the benefits and costs of WRI and assess whether and how to support further development and testing and, potentially, deployment. This final report addresses the following topics: • Introduction and Overview. • Description of WRI and this project. Mobile throughput of 802.11b from a moving vehicle to a roadside access point

This paper documents some tests of 802.11b wireless communication technology for vehicle to roadside communication. Data has been collected for a single vehicle communicating with a dedicated roadside antenna. The work is part of a larger effort to benchmark possible throughput of off-the-shelf wireless technologies. The results show that high-speed communication is possible over distances of u...

Remote Sensing Device High Emitter Identification with Confirmatory Roadside Inspection

INTRODUCTION Several uses of remote sensing devices (RSDs) have been proposed, such as on-road identification of high emitting vehicles and monitoring on-road vehicle emissions for program evaluation purposes. The Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) conducted a study to evaluate the ability of RSDs to consistently identify vehicles with excessive emissions and correctly classify the vehicles as f...

Vehicular connectivity in urban scenarios: effectiveness and potential of roadside, moving WAVE providers and hybrid solutions

Vehicular ad-hoc networks are expected to be a key enabling technology for the development of future Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs), by delivering a wide range of services, spanning from safety alerting to route guidance and entertainment. Most of ITS applications require vehicles on the road to access the Internet through wireless communications with road-side units. The high vehicl...

Alternative relaying for cooperative multiple-access channels in wireless vehicular networks

In this paper, a novel spectrally efficient half-duplex cooperative transmission protocol is proposed for cooperative multiple-access channels in wireless vehicular networks, where multiple sources (vehicles) deliver messages to a common destination (roadside base station or roadside infrastructure) with the help of multiple decode-and-forward relays (roadside stations). The basic idea is to ap...
